Purpose of Psychoeducational Assessments

As your child goes through school - a number of situations can bring about the need for a psychoeducational assessment. Your child might be anxious before school due to struggles with performance, their teacher might recommend testing for school placement, or testing for specific learning disabilities or dyslexia.

In addition to their school concerns, below are a few other reasons why children may be referred for a psychoeducational assessment:

  • Eligibility for special education resources or federal government resources
  • Disability evaluations (IEP, 504 Plans)
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (or ADHD)
  • School-based or standardized testing/entry examination accommodations) including the ACT, SAT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT and GMAT).
  • ADA accommodations
  • Gifted/IQ Testing

Benefits of a Psycheducational Assessment

Testing can provide a deeper insight into how your child learns, thinks, and processes information. An assessment can help reveal strengths, limitations, as well as specific diagnoses. During an assessment, we'll observe how your child solves problems and manages test anxiety, which helps us make specific recommendations for the future.

In addition, psychoeducational assessments can:
  • Inform educational planning, allowing for tailored instruction and accommodations to support learning.
  • Provide insights into behavioural and emotional issues, facilitating appropriate psychological interventions.
  • Offer guidance and recommendations in developing strategies to enhance academic performance, social skills, and overall well-being.

The Assessment Process

The testing process at Dimensions Psychology begins with an in-depth interview to get to know you and your child. We'll discuss the referral question, or what you consider to be the presenting problem. We will ask questions about family history and your child's medical and mental health history.

Behavioral Rating Scales

These can be filled out by your child, caregivers, and teachers. It helps us gauge learning differences and observed behavior at home and school.

Intelligence Testing

IQ tests are unique. One does not need to take the entire IQ test. We can pull from it the individual tests that evaluate specific cognitive abilities and score them individually. Additionally, we have tests that determine a child's reading, math, writing, short term memory, processing speed, and verbal comprehension.

Mood & Mental Health Evaluation

If we have concerns that a mood disorder is present, we have screenings that are made specifically for children that evaluate for anxiety, depression, and trauma.

Once testing is completed, we'll score, analyze and complete a comprehensive report. We meet with you and your child once more for a feedback session. Feedback includes a review of our findings, a diagnosis, and our recommendations. Our team will provide support and resource options that are uniquely tailored to your child.
