Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (or ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that interferes with a child's development and their ability to concentrateor control their impulses. Children can show signs of ADHD as early as 3 years old.
There are three types of ADHD that a child can be diagnosed with:
1. Primarily Inattentive Type:
Easily distracted, frequent day dreaming, losing homework, forgetting instructions, or consistently misplacing things
2. Primarily Hyperactive/Impulsive Type:
Frequently interrupting conversation or shouting things in class, restless or constant fidgeting, difficulty completing tasks, struggles to follow rules or behaviorally disruptive in school, at home, or in public.
3. Combined Type:
Combination of inattentive and hyperactivity symptoms.
There are medical and mental health disorders that can closely mimic ADHD or itssymptoms. It's important to seek a comprehensive assessment by an experienced psychologist to ensure accuracy because each of these conditions requires different treatment and support.
Anxiety
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Oppositional Defiance Disorder
Depression
Learning Disorders
Sleep Disorders (ex: sleep apnea)
Severe vitamin deficiencies
Thyroid issues
Hearing / Vision / Sensory Impairments
There isn't one single cause of ADHD. It's important to note that ADHD research is always evolving due to new brain imaging technology, public interest, with a wider population of people that are willing to participate in research. What we know is that ADHD is highly heritable, males tend to be diagnosed at a higher rate than females, there are significant differences in brain connectivity and structure in the ADHD brain versus a typical developing brain, and environmental factors can influence an ADHD diagnosis (ex: smoke exposure during pregnancy or premature birth).
There is no single test battery for ADHD evaluations. At Dimensions Psychology we start our evaluations by asking you and your child about what they are experiencing, gathering a family history, and reviewing any school or medical records relevant to your concerns.
We typically ask parents and teachers to complete questionnaires or symptom rating scales about your child or teen. If the child is old enough, they will complete self-report multiple-choice tests that help to assess the symptoms.
Direct testing with your child can include assessments that evaluate their memory, cognitive abilities, and intelligence. Once all testing has been completed and all information has been gathered, we will go over the results of the testing, discuss the strengths and needs of your child, and guide you and your family through the treatment options and support recommendations.
